Tribute to Horror in Music Part 1: Nomeansno

Nomeansno is one of my all-time favorite bands. I love their dark sense of humor, their killer bass riffs, and their refusal to die - they've been around almost all of my life and I ain't no spring chicken!
The reason I'm here telling you about these guys at the moment, however, is because they know how to turn a punk song into a horror show that you can't get out of your head. I'm not going to get too wordy about it, I'll let the music speak for itself.

And now ladies and gentlemen, I give you Nomeansno...

To begin, since it's Father's Day, here's a chilling tale about an abusive father that won't leave you with happy feelings when you listen...

One of my favorites, this is what happens when a ransom note becomes an epic punk song:

"Have you heard the news? The dead walk!"

I could definitely include quite a few other songs here, but for now, I will just encourage you to listen to more of this most excellent Canadian band's music. You can find out more at:

  1. Michelle, NMN are my favourite band of all time (Victims Family and Alice Donut are up there too). I've seen em three times here in Australia and they never disappoint. Watching them play "The Tower" in a second encore one time was one of the ultimate moments of musical catharsis for me! I'm actually writing a short piece at illogicalcontraption.blogspot.com on Sex Mad in the next week or so.

Had you heard of this cool bootleg of outakes?

Anyway, awesome blog, consider yourself linked at Unflinching Eye.

  2. Thanks! I put Unflinching Eye in my Bloody Blogroll as well - and most deservedly so!
I am jealous that you've gotten to see them... They rarely tour in the States, but I can't say I blame 'em. A lot of clubs do that "pay to play" shit, and also it seems like no one has a clue who they are so they don't get booked... Maybe one day when I'm not so damn poor I can get up to see them in Toronto or something.
I have checked out that EP of outtakes, fun stuff. I love "Cats, Sex, and Nazis".. I know I'm in the minority on that one, but it cracks me up when I hear it.
Let me know when you post your Sex Mad blog, I'm looking forward to it! :)

  3. "Cats, Sex and Nazis" is a great song, love it.

Funny thing is, I've done a lot of horror movie-metal/punk crossover posts at my blog too, but it never occurred to me to use NMN. But now I think about it, of course their music is full of gothic horror references. I guess another one would be "the day everything became nothing/dead souls"!

    Even cats, sex and nazis:

    "Zombies eat human flesh
Which part do you like the best?
I like the heart the best
    Zombies eat human flesh"

  4. Definitely, there's so many that one of these days I'm gonna have to sit down and make a list! They're touring here in the US in the fall but the closest they're getting to me is Chicago... I doubt I can travel that far for a show, but who knows what the future will bring. I'd like to see them at least once before they start dropping like flies, they aren't getting any younger and neither am I!
